Key Term:  Athlete

Defined an athlete is a person who trains to compete in athletics

A typical golfer is not an athlete.  Although it takes physical activity to play golf, the activity is simply for the enjoyment or benefit golf provides.

Tiger Woods is a golfer but also an athlete.  Tiger trains to win golf tournaments on the PGA Tour.  He has gained 30lbs of muscle since turning professional in 1996 and has a daily routine that is built around stretching up to 40 minutes before each session, core exercises, endurance runs of 7 miles and speed runs of 3 miles, along with weight training. Tiger’s daily schedule looks something like this:

6 a.m. – Lifts weights

7:30 a.m. – Breakfast

9 a.m. – Range to hit balls

11 a.m. – Putting Green

11:30 a.m. – Plays 9 holes

12:30 p.m. – Lunch

1 p.m. – Back to range to hit balls

3 p.m. – Works on short game

4 p.m. – Plays 9 more holes

5 p.m. – Back to range to hit balls

5:30 p.m. – Putting Green for more practice
